Eric Musselman, USC's coach, discusses Bronny James's next decisions
Just a day after USC appointed Eric Musselman as their new coach, freshman Bronny James, son of NBA star LeBron James, declared for the 2024 NBA draft and entered the transfer portal. On his inaugural day in charge, Musselman addressed James's future with the Trojans in light of his NBA prospects for next season.
Musselman is facing immediate pressure to build his coaching staff and form a team. Guard Boogie Ellis has exhausted his eligibility, and junior Kobe Johnson announced his commitment to UCLA. Additionally, freshman Bronny James, son of LeBron James, declared for the NBA draft on Friday while keeping his college eligibility intact and entering the transfer portal."I need to try to get a hold of Bronny. I've texted him," Musselman said. "Certainly he's got a lot of options and we respect those options. We just want him to know that, hey, this opportunity here, if you want to play at USC, we'd love to have him. Such a talented young man."
Under Enfield's leadership, the Trojans posted a record of 15-18 overall and 8-12 in the Pac-12, marking the first instance in five years that they failed to achieve at least 20 wins.
According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, James will finalize his decision on returning to college or entering the draft after meeting with NBA teams. Should he opt for another college basketball season, Musselman faces the challenge of retaining James in Los Angeles. Andy Enfield, who recruited the freshman, departed USC earlier this week to assume the vacant SMU coaching position.
