Brooklyn Nets' Star Player Ben Simmons successfully underwent back surgery
The Brooklyn Nets announced Thursday that guard Ben Simmons underwent successful surgery for a nerve impingement in his lower back. According to the team, Simmons is expected to fully recover in time for next season's training camp. This season, the former No. 1 overall pick and Rookie of the Year had a career-low average of 6.1 points in 23.9 minutes per game, appearing in only 15 games.
This marks Simmons' second back surgery since joining the Nets two years ago after a trade from the Philadelphia 76ers. In May 2022, he underwent microdiscectomy surgery for a herniated L-4 disk, causing him to miss the entire season. Additionally, he played in only 42 games last season due to knee injuries and recurring back problems.
Dr. Timur Urakov at UHealth Jackson Memorial Medical Center performed Simmons' recent microscopic partial discectomy.

Here is his Statement :
«It is a continuation of the same injury that he has dealt with all year. We are trying to get clearer answers as to how to get him out of the reactive cycle he's in, We continue to try and find non-surgical options to allow Ben to move forward on a permanent basis and that is where this is my responsibility and I am [the] one to blame."
A couple of days later, the Nets declared that the Australian standout would be sidelined for the rest of the season, with interim head coach Kevin Ollie providing encouraging remarks :
"I know he has a lot of emotions that's inside of him," he said. "But he's been down this road before and I know he's gonna get prepared with his team, our medical staff, our organization, and we have empathy for him."
What's Next Now?
With or without Ben Simmons, the Nets' record is struggling. They hold a 7-8 record with him and a 19-32 record without him. Despite a promising start to the season, they now find themselves just shy of making the play-in tournament, currently sitting in 11th place in the Eastern Conference standings. Simmons still has one season remaining on the five-year contract he signed with Philadelphia in 2019, with the Nets owing him $40.3 million next year. Considering the Nets' history with max players like Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and James Harden, who didn't quite work out as expected, it's likely that the team will part ways with Simmons and look to rebuild with fresh talent. However, the decision will ultimately hinge on Simmons' contract demands and the associated risks.
Only time will tell.
