Devin Booker on the Decline of Rivalries in the NBA
During his guest appearance on 'Old Old Man & The Three,' Suns standout Devin Booker provided an intriguing perspective on the decline of team rivalries in today's NBA. Booker suggested that players no longer see the value in initiating conflicts over on-court matchups.
«I'd say there's no real rivalries because of grassroots basketball, A lot of these guys we've known for a really long time and I think people just realize that it's not that deep half the time. People always say 'they not about to fight on the court,' yeah that's a half-a-million-dollar fight -- like, nobody should do that! I haven't heard it too many times where crazy lines were crossed on the court... but it's usually not that deep.»
He said.
Booker acknowledges his friendly rivalry with Luka Doncic, but he suggests that the intensity of old-school rivalries in the NBA has faded. In the past, players like Magic Johnson and Larry Bird ignited intense rivalries that defined eras. From Michael Jordan vs. Isiah Thomas to Kobe Bryant vs. Shaquille O'Neal, these matchups were highly anticipated and emotionally charged. However, in today's NBA, players prioritize camaraderie over conflict, marking a significant cultural shift in the league.
