Devin Booker's future with Suns is 'Uncertain', might request a trade
Rumors are swirling in the NBA circles, and it's got everyone talking about Devin Booker's future with the Phoenix Suns. According to one Eastern Conference GM who spoke to NBA reporter Ric Bucher, it's "unclear" whether Booker is all in with staying in Phoenix. This comes on the heels of the Suns' disappointing sweep by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 2024 playoffs, despite a solid 49-win season.
"San Antonio has the assets to get him," the second exec said. "So does Oklahoma City. And it's really the only way Phoenix can change course."
The Suns have built a high-cost roster centered around Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal, who together will rake in a whopping $151.1 million next season. Throw in Jusuf Nurkic's $18.1 million salary, and you're looking at about $169.2 million tied up in just four players. Plus, Grayson Allen's four-year, $70 million extension only adds to what's becoming a hefty payroll for a team that just couldn't make it past the first round.
NBA insider Gerald Bourguet of PHNX Sports reports that the New York Knicks are ready to offer "almost anything" to the Suns for Devin Booker, having shown interest in acquiring him since 2020.
''According to that source, the Knicks have been interested in Booker dating back to Leon Rose's instatement as team president back in 2020,'' Bourguet wrote. ''Rose, a former CAA player agent prior to being hired by New York, once served as Booker's representation, and other Knicks personnel with connections to the 27-year-old Suns star recently put out feelers about his potential interest in coming to New York.''
Booker, one of the league's top scorers, didn't disappoint on the stat sheet, averaging 27.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 6.9 assists while shooting 49.2% from the field this season. He's set to earn $49.4 million next season following a four-year, $221 million extension signed in July 2022.
Despite the financial gamble and playoff frustrations, Suns owner Mat Ishbia remains confident in this star-studded core. But as the Suns brace for an offseason of speculation, the pressure is on to prove that their big investment can indeed translate into deeper playoff success. Will Booker stick around to see it through, or is a change on the horizon? Only time will tell, but for now, the Suns' saga is one of the most watchable dramas in the NBA.
