The combination of Murray and Young hasn't been successful, and since the NBA trade deadline, the Hawks have been considering trading one of their stars, primarily Murray at that time. Another report, in line with what NBC Sports and others have stated, suggests that the Hawks are "likely" to trade one of their stars this summer. This latest information comes from Marc Stein in his Substack, reiterating what he has been reporting since February. Both Young and Murray are represented by the same agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group.

This season, when Trae Young and Dejounte Murray share the court, the Atlanta Hawks have a net rating of -5.8, according to statistics from Cleaning the Glass. However, when Young is on the court without Murray, the team boasts a net rating of +2.1, while they maintain a +1.1 net rating when Murray plays without Young. Notably, the Hawks have recorded a 12-10 record with Young sidelined due to a finger injury, during which Murray assumed a larger role.

As the Hawks contemplate their next steps, they must weigh factors such as which player can fetch a better return in a trade and who they can effectively build their team around. Young stands out as a prolific offensive force, excelling as an All-Star scorer and elite passer with averages of 24.6 points and 10.8 assists per game. However, he is also criticized for his defense and is under contract for $138 million over the next three seasons. On the other hand, Murray has stepped up admirably in Young's absence, averaging 24.6 points, 9 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game, and is owed $113.4 million over four years.

The Lakers have been linked to Young, partly due to representation by Klutch Sports, but there are numerous other potential suitors as well. Looking ahead to the summer poses a long-term question for Coach Quin Snyder and the Hawks, but they must first address a more immediate concern: how to navigate Young's imminent return in time for the team's Play-In Game against the Bulls on April 17, and potentially beyond if they advance. As previously mentioned, the combination of Young and Murray hasn't proven effective, and although Snyder can stagger their minutes to some extent, the Hawks struggled to a 24-32 record earlier in the season when both guards were in the lineup. The challenge for the Hawks lies in finding a way to win and progress with both players in the rotation.
