Unlikelihood of Nets Pursuing Buyout Agreement with Ben Simmons
According to Brian Lewis of the New York Post, there's been "no sign" from the Nets' camp indicating any contemplation of a contract buyout for Ben Simmons. Simmons is due to earn $40.3 million next season, concluding his five-year, $177.2 million contract, widely regarded as one of the NBA's most unfavorable deals.
Purchasing Simmons' contract doesn't seem logical presently, except for the possibility of saving ownership some money. With the Nets not nearing the luxury tax limit, Simmons' $40.3 million salary could serve as valuable trade leverage if the team pursues a star acquisition. The Nets' point guard spot has been a focal point over the years, experiencing ups and downs, from thrilling to vacant to overcompensated to injury-ridden. As this challenging season nears its end, GM Sean Marks must prioritize finding the right fit for next season. This brings attention to Dennis Schroder and Ben Simmons.
Schroder expressed his desire to continue with the Nets, while signs suggest Simmons may also remain with the team. Initially slated as the starting point guard, Simmons' season was marred by a mere 15 appearances due to a back nerve issue.
