Lakers Looking to Add a Two-Time All-Star in Blockbuster Trade Proposal
Since the Chicago Bulls acquired guard Zach LaVine in 2017, he has enjoyed remarkable individual success, becoming a two-time NBA All-Star and consistently scoring 20+ points per game. However, despite his achievements, this success has failed to translate into significant team accomplishments, with the Bulls making the playoffs only once during his tenure. Additionally, they have found themselves near the bottom of the draft lottery in nearly every season except for that solitary playoff appearance.
This situation could undoubtedly take a toll on any player, prompting speculation about the possibility of LaVine seeking a fresh start with a championship-contending team. Eddie Bitar of Fadeaway World proposed a potential trade that would land him in Los Angeles.Trade Proposal
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Zach LaVine
Chicago Bulls Receive: Austin Reaves, D'Angelo Russell, 2029 First-Round Pick
Why Hasn't LaVine Been Traded Yet?
LaVine's association with the Lakers has been widely discussed due to his shared representation under Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group, the same agency that represents LeBron James and Anthony Davis. While multiple teams have expressed interest in acquiring LaVine, as reported by NBA insider Jamal Collier of ESPN, none have been willing to meet the substantial trade demands set by the Chicago Bulls. It's worth noting that LaVine inked a lucrative five-year, $215.2 million contract in July 2022.
Despite LaVine's substantial contract, he remains an outstanding athlete with a strong shooting ability and impressive productivity. Last season he averaged 24.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting 48.5% from the field, 37.5% from three and 84.8% from the free-throw line. Additionally, at just 28 years old, LaVine is firmly in his prime, suggesting that he has several more years of high-level performance ahead before any decline in his abilities.
Lakers 18th title is on its way
A trio featuring LeBron, LaVine, and Davis would undoubtedly strike fear into the hearts of opponents and could potentially outshine the new star trios in Phoenix, Milwaukee, and Boston. The Lakers, in this scenario, don't seem to be sacrificing much. D'Angelo Russell, at 27 years old, is not on the same level as LaVine in terms of talent and production. While Austin Reaves is showing promise as a developing player, acquiring a proven and consistent talent like LaVine might be a wiser choice, rather than banking on a player's potential.
With the loss of D'Angelo, an important question must be asked. Who's going to play point guard? Currently, their depth at the position isn't ideal, there's a very simple answer. It's LeBron. He's already led the league in assists in his first season with the Lakers, and he's widely considered as one of the greatest floor generals of all time. This would mean potentially that Jarred Vanderbilt or Rui Hachimura would need to fill his slot at small forward, which isn't that bad of a spot to be in considering you'd now have Zach LaVine.
The Bulls Look to the Future
The timing for this potential deal would be crucial, ideally taking place near the end of the trade deadline. If the Bulls are having a successful season, they might opt to retain LaVine. However, if they find themselves in a more familiar struggling position, it could be the right moment to consider moving on from him. In terms of the return, the deal appears to offer the Bulls a favorable package. hile D'Angelo Russell may have streaky shooting tendencies, he still shot 41.4% from three with the Lakers and brings valuable playmaking skills to the table.
Austin Reaves is emerging as a promising young talent, and he demonstrated his skills effectively during the playoffs last season. He managed to shoot 44.3% from three and 89.5% from the free-throw line, all while averaging 16.9 PPG and 4.6 APG. If he sustains this level of performance, there's a strong possibility of him evolving into a consistent 20-point scorer, making him a valuable secondary scoring option alongside DeMar DeRozan.
No real losers in the deal
Honestly, this deal appears quite ideal on paper. The Los Angeles Lakers would finally secure a third star to contend for an NBA title as long as LeBron remains with the team. LaVine and Davis could then assume leadership once he departs or retires. On the other hand, the Bulls can focus on the future, benefiting from an extra draft pick from the Lakers. Additionally, they acquire two complementary pieces to support DeMar, increasing their playoff potential.
