In the wake of the Jontay Porter betting scandal, the NBA is rethinking its betting guidelines in collaboration with its partner sportsbooks, ESPN sources reveal. The league and its betting affiliates are mulling over several changes to the betting menus to avoid similar future incidents.

One potential change could involve banning bets on players with two-way contracts between the NBA and the G League. There's also talk of possibly eliminating 'under' bets on player props, though concerns linger that such restrictions might drive bettors toward unregulated markets.

"Since states began legalizing sports betting in 2018, we have worked closely with betting operators as well as integrity monitoring organizations to put in place essential monitoring and reporting systems so that we are best positioned to identify potential betting anomalies and to act to protect the integrity of our game," an NBA spokesperson said in a statement to ESPN.

The urgency for these discussions increased after Porter was slapped with a lifetime ban on April 17, following an NBA investigation that found him guilty of sharing confidential info with bettors and betting on league games — a clear violation of NBA rules.

Adding another layer of complexity, the NBA holds commercial agreements with major sportsbooks like BetMGM, DraftKings, and FanDuel, influencing the types of bets offered. This incident has prompted a critical reassessment of those relationships, as reported by the gambling industry site Legal Sports Report.
