Austin Rivers Stirs Controversy with Comments on Bronny & LeBron
LeBron James, the Los Angeles Lakers' standout, has openly expressed his wish to share the NBA court with his son, Bronny. However, retired NBA guard Austin Rivers holds a different perspective.
In a recent appearance on ESPN's "NBA Today," Rivers shared his reservations about the possibility of a LeBron-Bronny partnership. Drawing from his own experiences as a former lottery pick, Rivers argued against the idea, suggesting it could pose disadvantages for Bronny should he pursue a career in the NBA.''I don't want to see Bronny play with [LeBron James], I really don't. I went through something similar. What happens is a lot of people start to discredit everything that you've done. Him getting drafted and playing with his dad, I don't want that negativity to come his way cause he doesn't deserve it," said Rivers. "He's not a top 10 pick, he's not a lottery pick. He's none of those things. I was all those things — and still when I went and to go play for the Clippers, people were like, ‘Oh, you're only in the league because of your dad.'''
Austin Rivers, known for his tenure under his father, former NBA player turned Hall-of-Fame coach Doc Rivers, had a mixed career despite being a top high school prospect. Despite averaging 8.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists over 11 NBA seasons, he faced criticism for nepotism. Now, Rivers suggests that Bronny's situation could be tougher, given LeBron James' immense fame compared to his own father's. Bronny, a freshman at USC, has posted modest stats of 5.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 14 games, with a field goal percentage of 37.2%.
