Top 5 MVP Favourites For 2023/24 NBA Season
With less than two months remaining until the start of the next NBA season, fans are beginning to speculate on how well or poorly teams and players will perform next year. One main topic for discussion is who is most likely to win the MVP award. So, here is a look at the five favorites to win the coveted award next year.
5. Jayson TatumJayson Tatum has become one of the top players in all of basketball since he was drafted 3rd overall by the Celtics in the 2017 NBA draft. Following Kyrie Irving's departure, he has been the undoubted leader and best player on this Boston team, which has made it to the Eastern Conference finals in the last two consecutive seasons, including the 2021 Conference Finals, which they won but eventually lost to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals.
Tatum is still only 25 and improving. With his best season just behind him, where he averaged over 30 points per game, betting sites have Tatum booked with the fifth-best chance of winning the MVP award, with
prices at around 8/1 (+800).
4. Joel Embiid
Despite the previous two MVPs before Embiid winning the award in back-to-back seasons, the current holder of the award is only backed as the fourth-most likely to win it this upcoming season. This may be due to the uncertainty of the 76ers' roster this season, with teammate James Harden wanting out of Philadelphia, or it may even have something to do with Embiid himself hinting at leaving the franchise.
We know, after leading the league in scoring last season, that Embiid is certainly capable of winning the award. He is expected to be just as dominant this season and definitely among the MVP candidates, even if he does not win the award again. The odds for Embiid to win MVP are currently 7/1 (+700).
3. Luka Doncic
Luka spent his summer playing internationally in the FIBA World Cup, where he broke a 37-year-old scoring record. With this experience, he will be looking to return to the NBA and bring the same offensive potency he showcased at the tournament.
He is also the most favored player to win the award for the first time, as the only players with better odds have won the award previously. His price to win MVP is currently at 6/1 (+600).
2. Giannis Antetokounmpo
The Greek Freak is a former two-time MVP winner, and after three seasons without the award, he is highly favored to come back and win it again. Although he has already won MVP awards and a championship in 2021, it seems like Giannis has a chip on his shoulder following the Bucks' shocking first-round defeat to the Miami Heat in the previous playoffs.
With hints that he may leave Milwaukee if they aren't as competitive as he likes, you can expect the Bucks to be playing with high intensity all season long, and this may help their star player receive MVP honors once again. Current odds have Antetokounmpo marked at 11/2 (+550).
1. Nikola Jokic
Unsurprisingly, the current NBA Finals MVP, Nikola Jokic, is the most likely to win the regular season MVP award next season. He could be considered the best basketball player in the world right now based on his form, as he led the entire NBA last season in player efficiency, true shooting percentage, win shares, and both offensive and defensive plus-minus.
The Serbian has already won the award two out of the last three seasons, and after winning their first NBA Championship, the Nuggets will certainly be a team that all others will be gunning for, which may elevate Jokic's performance to an even higher level. Current odds for Jokic to win MVP again are 9/2 (+450).
