The NBA revisits the term "unintended consequences," previously associated with the 2016 salary cap hike allowing the Warriors to sign Kevin Durant. This time, it pertains to players like reigning MVP Joel Embiid and standout Tyrese Haliburton, who risk missing awards due to falling short of the 65-game threshold.

On Wednesday afternoon, NBA Executive Vice President Joe Dumars informed Yahoo Sports.

«You're always gonna have unintended consequences, that's the first thing, »

Embiid, last season's MVP, faces the 65-game threshold with knee issues, having played 34 of 46 games. Haliburton, a standout, contends with missed games due to injury, challenging award eligibility.

NBA EVP Joe Dumars defends the 65-game rule, emphasizing collective bargaining despite player criticism. Notable players like Irving and Butler are already ineligible.

«Lest we forget, this was collectively bargained, players' association, signed off by the owners, signed off by the competition committee,» Dumars said. «And we've updated the numbers. We throw a lot of numbers around, and at the end of the day, everybody landed on 65 and said, 'You know what, that's 20 percent, 20 percent of the season basically. That's fair.' Everybody in the ecosystem signed off on this.»

Dumars acknowledges scoring surge concerns, prompting discussions on maintaining balance. Proposals for potential adjustments, considering offensive dominance, are ongoing, reflecting the league's commitment to equilibrium.

Dumars, a six-time All-Star and 1989 Finals MVP, played 82 games three times and 75-79 games in four seasons during his 14-year career. If the current rule existed then, he would have been eligible in every 82-game season. His last year was the 1998-99 lockout-shortened season, where he played 38 games.
