Stephen Jackson Calls Out Giannis Antetokounmpo Over Super Team Remark
After winning the NBA Finals, Giannis Antetokounmpo made a pretty bold statement. His exact quote was "I could go to a super team ... but this is the hard way to do it, and we did it. We f---ing did it."
There has been an increase in the number of "super teams" in the NBA lately, with Brooklyn Nets and the Lakers to name a couple. Many people applaud the fact that Milwaukee won the championship with a team that was essentially built from the ground up and didn't rely on trading for big names in the league. Most people understood what Giannis was saying with his statement.
But former NBA player Stephen Jackson sure didn't like it. On his All The Smoke Podcast, Jackson said that Giannis is in fact on a super team. Jackson said "He has a closer, just like Shaq was the most dominant, but he had a closer in Kobe. And you have Jrue Holiday - one of the best defenders in the game - so don't make it seem like your team is just a bunch of D-leaguers."
Jackson takes offense at the super team remark from Giannis but it seems like he is missing the point. No one is denying that the Bucks are an incredible team. And, yes, Jrue Holiday is one heck of a defender. However, Giannis is simply saying that the team was not created through acquisitions and trades like many others were. This was a squad that was assembled through the draft primarily and worked its way up the hard way, sticking together through the highs and lows and not looking to trade for established A-listers to win the trophy. It's hard to argue with that.
Many people called Jackson out for his comments, saying he was simply trying to fire up a controversy. Giannis, however, hasn't responded.
