LeBron James reveals his potential retirement date in new commercial
A new video advertisement for the company Beats by Dre was uploaded to Instagram yesterday, featuring stars LeBron James and Erling Haaland. Both stars have come off historic seasons in their respective sports: LeBron became the all-time leading scorer in NBA history, and Haaland broke the single-season goals record for a Premier League season.
The most interesting part of this commercial, however, featured LeBron's wife, Savannah James, when her narration gave us some potential insights into the future retirement of "King James."Lebrons Retirement
LeBron's retirement seems imminent considering his age and how many seasons he has played in the NBA. He is about to enter his 21st season, and only Vince Carter has managed to play in a 22nd season in the entire history of the league. Rumors and speculation even led people to believe that last season would be his last after the Lakers' Western Conference finals loss and James' comments in the press conference following their elimination.
Many fans were not fooled by the comments; it has been well-documented for several years that LeBron James wants to play in the NBA with his son Bronny, who will be eligible for next year's NBA draft. LeBron then went viral for his speech at the ESPY's where he confirmed he will be returning this upcoming season. Fans are now beginning to believe that LeBron will play two more years so that he can have one season with his son, then retire. But Savannah's comments in this recent ad hint at LeBron playing for several more years yet.
Savannah James Comments
Savannah narrates over a portion of the commercial which features LeBron, but the most notable line is where she hints at LeBron not only playing with his eldest son Bronny but also his second son Bryce. The ad actually shows both of their sons as this line is said, to add further reason for speculation.
How Long Will Lebron Play
If this commercial is to be believed, then LeBron will play until Bryce becomes eligible in the NBA draft, which is not until 2026. This does seem absolutely absurd considering that is 4 more seasons away, and LeBron is set to turn 39 in a couple of months, but if anybody can do it, it would be LeBron James.
The only sign of slowing down is that he has played fewer games per season than we are used to seeing from him. But even still, he has played more games than other younger stars such as Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving over recent years, and when he does play, his effectiveness seems to have remained the same.
In fact, last season, in year 20, LeBron averaged 28.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 6.8 assists, which is an all-time historic statline for someone of any age, let alone a player in their late 30s. With the preseason finished, LeBron has shown glimpses that he will be just as good as ever and looks to prove this tonight in the Lakers' season opener against last year's conference finals opponent, the Denver Nuggets.
The Commercial
LeBron has been the face of Beats by Dre for several years now and has been featured in numerous commercials for the brand, but this is the first time that he has been featured alongside European soccer megastar Erling Haaland.
This latest video, however, has been received extraordinarily well by fans, with most feedback being positive and many claims that this is the best Beats by Dre ad ever.
