Dwayne Wade Talks About Kevin Love Incident: "I'd Just Want to Apologize"
You may have forgotten but Dwayne Wade actually spent some time playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2017-2018, alongside LeBron James. You may have also forgotten but Wade made some headlines after getting into a gnarly argument with Cavs teammate Kevin Love.
The incident in question happened after Love went home with an illness during a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Love then didn't attend practice the following day, upsetting his peers. According to the press, Wade and other players then "verbally attacked" Love and was a part of a "wide-ranging, heated discussion." It wasn't pretty.Just months later, Love would come forward to publicly discuss his battles with mental health. Love disclosed that panic attacks had caused him to miss games and it was assumed the episode between him and Wade was caused by a rough bout of mental health problems.
Now, Wade has opened up to his buddy Carmelo Anthony about the entire argument. Speaking on Anthony's "What's In Your Glass" podcast, Wade showed remorse for his actions.
"I had an incident in Cleveland with Kevin Love where I didn't know that he dealt with or suffered from any mental health issues. I was on him, because I'm an old dude trying to—this is my last ride to win a championship, and I didn't know what he was dealing with mentally. So we had a very ugly incident as a team that happened that came out in the papers and all those things about it, and then once I left Cleveland, Kevin became more outspoken and became really a voice for mental health. And I didn't have any idea."
Wade continued, saying that things between him and Love aren't particularly great still but he wishes he could make amends.
«Kevin Love may not like me as a person because of that moment, but if I ever got the opportunity to see him again, I'd just want to apologize to him because I didn't know what he was dealing with, and I was just trying to say, 'We need you, we need you,' but I didn't know that he was dealing with something that was so serious that I could not fathom or even know what he had to deal with."
Good on Wade for wishing he played things differently and showing compassion for Love. Let's hope they can patch things up at some point.
