Bad News For Lakers Key Player As NBA Season Approaches

For the majority of the NBA preseason, Los Angeles Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt has been conspicuously absent from the court due to an apparent heel injury. He has only been able to participate in the preseason opener thus far.

What may raise concerns is that it appears his absence will persist. It is already anticipated that he will be unavailable for the final preseason game against the Phoenix Suns this Thursday, and this absence might extend beyond that.

When asked if Vanderbilt would be available for the Lakers regular season opener against the Denver Nuggets, Darvin Ham had this to say:

"We'll see."

This answer doesn't provide a lot of confidence for Lakers fans and could spell trouble for the start of their season.

Jarred Vanderbilt's Impact

Following his trade to Los Angeles, Vanderbilt played in 26 regular-season games for the Lakers, with 24 of those being starts. He averaged 7.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game, with shooting percentages of 52.9% from the field and 30.3% from three-point range.

Jarred is primarily recognized for his formidable defensive skills and was poised to play an essential role in the Lakers' lineup, given his ability to defend multiple positions. His versatility was demonstrated when he was entrusted with guarding Stephen Curry during the previous season's playoffs.

The Lakers New Game Plan

Even with Vanderbilt's injury, the Lakers made the necessary moves this off season to bolster their forward depth. During the off season, they signed forward Taurean Prince and re-signed forward Rui Hachimura. Additionally, they made a noteworthy addition in the form of wing Cam Reddish through free agency. In the event that Vanderbilt is unable to play, these players stand as credible options to step in and fulfill his minutes.

Since Vanderbilt primarily operates as a power forward, an alternative option could involve shifting Anthony Davis into that role. Davis has a wealth of experience in that position, dating back to his tenure with the New Orleans Pelicans. This strategic adjustment would provide the Lakers with the flexibility to utilize newly acquired centers like Jaxon Hayes or Christian Wood as needed.

Outlook on the Regular Season Opener

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Denver Nuggets are set to face off in their regular-season opener on October 24th. This matchup has a storied and intense rivalry, marked by ongoing trash talk between the two teams. Notably, each team has knocked the other out of contention in the Western Conference Finals, ultimately going on to secure their respective recent NBA Championships.

There is a possibility that Jarred Vanderbilt may be cleared to play, depending on his physical assessment on Friday. In the event of his absence, this opens the door for other players to showcase their skills. It appears that the remainder of the team is well-prepared and eager for what promises to be a much-anticipated matchup.
