San Antonio Spurs Retain Guard on a 5-Year Contract Extension
While the basketball world was busy focusing on Jimmy Butler's new hairdo, the San Antonio Spurs signed a significant deal today. They retained guard Devin Vassell with a 5-year, $146 million extension, of which $135 million is guaranteed, per Michael Scotto.
Devin Vassell was selected with the 11th overall pick by the Spurs back in 2020. He is an up-and-coming young shooter, consistently improving his scoring by an average of 6.5 PPG each season throughout his 3-year career. This season was by far his most productive and efficient, demonstrating that he is going to be a name to watch in the future.
Retaining Devin Vassell was just a small step in developing a talented team in San Antonio. Keldon Johnson is another San Antonio Spur who took a massive leap last season, averaging 22.0 PPG. Arguably, the team's most valuable asset is Victor Wembanyama, the 1st overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, known for his incredible shot-blocking abilities and promising offensive skill set. The team probably isn't ready to make waves in the NBA yet, but they've laid the groundwork for something special.
