The Blazers are firmly behind Chauncey Billups as their coach
In a press briefing on Monday, Trail Blazers GM Joe Cronin reiterated the organization's backing of Chauncey Billups as head coach for the upcoming 2024-25 season, according to reports from Sean Highkin of Rose Garden Report and Bill Oram of The Oregonian on Twitter. This affirmation comes despite Portland's failure to secure a playoff berth in each of Billups' initial three seasons at the helm.
There has been speculation about the Blazers potentially parting ways with Billups, which could lead to him being considered for the Detroit Pistons' head of basketball operations role. However, Cronin dismissed these rumors, describing Billups as "an incredible leader in this organization," according to Bill Orem of The Oregonian.
Portland struggled in the 2023-24 season, finishing with a 21-61 record, the worst in the Western Conference. They ranked 29th in offensive rating (107.6) and 23rd in defensive rating (116.6). However, the blame can't solely be placed on Billups. The team underwent significant changes, trading away veteran starters like Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum.
Moreover, injuries plagued the team, with key players missing numerous games. Billups signed a five-year contract in 2021, with the upcoming season being his final guaranteed year, and the club holding an option for the following season.
