The Worst is Confirmed for MVP Favorite
The Reigning MVP Joel Embiid had to leave in the 4th quarter of the 76ers 119-107 loss on Tuesday night against the Golden State Warriors due to a knee injury. He is set to have an MRI done on Wednesday to see the extent of the damage done.
Late in the 4th quarter as he was being double teamed by Jonathan Kuminga and Draymond Green, Kuminga poked the ball away from Embiid, as he fell to retrieve the ball Kuminga fell on top of Embiid's knee. Embiid was in visible pain but was able to limp to the locker room. This injury would be on top of the injury to the same knee that kept Embiid out the previous two games.Coach Nick Nurse says he does not believe the two injuries are related. Embiid did not look like his normal MVP dominating self throughout the game. He had very little lift when defending the rim, and did not attack the rim much, settling for mid-range jumpers and three pointers.
Embiid can only miss another five games before being deemed as ineligible for the league MVP. He right now would be the favorite to win the award as he has dominated the league when healthy. ESPN reports that the knee injury is something Embiid will have to deal with the remainder of the season. Hopefully for Sixers fans, it will not inhibit him from being the dominant player that Philadelphia has grown to know and love!
