76ers' De'Anthony Melton aims for game 3 return against Knicks
Coach Nick Nurse has indicated that De'Anthony Melton, who has been sidelined with a back injury, participated in Wednesday's practice and is on course to potentially play in Thursday's Game 3 against the Knicks. However, Kyle Neubeck of AllPHLY.com reports that Melton will likely still be listed as questionable in the official injury report.
Melton's participation has been limited this season; he has played in only five games since January 12 and last appeared on April 12. If cleared to play, it's expected that he will be gradually reintegrated into the game. Throughout the season, Melton made 38 regular-season appearances, averaging 11.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.6 steals over nearly 27 minutes per game. Initially a starter, Melton played a key role in the 76ers' early successes, providing stellar defense and shooting, effectively complementing Tyrese Maxey.
While Kyle Lowry currently starts alongside Maxey, Melton's return could significantly enhance the 76ers' bench strength, which is crucial as the Knicks' reserves have dominated, outscoring Philadelphia's bench 58-17 so far in the playoffs.
Melton isn't typically one to generate his own offense, but he excels as a spot-up shooter who can capitalize on open shots from deep or take advantage of defensive closeouts. His defensive versatility will also be critical in containing Jalen Brunson and matching New York's pace on fast breaks, potentially providing the 76ers with the necessary lift to balance the series.
