Shock NBA Superstar Plays for Dominican Republic at World Cup
This years 2023 FIBA World Cup will feature the most NBA talent it ever has with 55 Players representing across 27 out of the 32 teams. The Tournament also has a new record of 106 combined current NBA players, NBA draftees and players with NBA experience.
One Surprising standout of the record setting tournament is former number 1 pick Karl-Anthony Towns who is representing the Dominican Republic this summer. Towns' mother Jacqueline Cruz was a native of the Dominican Republic which is where he gets his heritage from. KAT has actually represented the Dominican Republic before when he was 17 and competed at the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship.Towns' initially chose the Dominican Republic back in 2012 when reports suggested that the United States were looking to recruit him and in 2017 he shared his reasoning with Marc J.Spears.
"It was a chance to represent my mother and a big part of my family. It was an amazing experience. I was very excited. When an opportunity like that presents itself, it's hard to say no."
With it being 10 years since Towns last played internationally you can be sure that he will now be the main focal point of this Dominican side at the FIBA World Cup and with 3 former NBA players as well as Golden State warriors guard Lester Quinones alongside him it will be interesting to see how far this team can go.
