Grizzlies' Smart Expresses Frustration Over Celtics Trade

Former Boston Celtics star Marcus Smart didn't mince words when discussing his feelings about the trade to the Memphis Grizzlies. Smart expressed his frustration over the lack of transparency leading up to the trade. According to The Athletic's Jared Weiss, Smart explained,
"If I'm being quite frank, I knew I would be traded eventually, just figured it would be the next season, based on my contract and the new CBA. But it was just the way it happened. I was told everything was good after asking multiple times. Like, 'I'm hearing (rumors), what's going on?' And they're like, 'No, you're good, you're good, you're good.' And then when I do hear about the trade, it's from Shams (Charania) on Twitter before I hear from the team."

Unexpected Turn of Events

Smart, who had signed a four-year, $76.49-million contract extension with the Celtics in August 2021, was constantly surrounded by trade rumors throughout his tenure in Boston. Despite this, the timing of the trade took him by surprise.

Memphis' Bold Move

Smart's journey took a new turn when he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in a significant three-way trade involving the Washington Wizards and Celtics. Notable players like Kristaps Porzingis and Danilo Gallinari were part of this trade, which occurred in June. This move added another layer of depth to the Grizzlies' roster, just in time for the upcoming season.

Smart's Role with Memphis

With Grizzlies star point guard Ja Morant set to serve a 25-game suspension, Marcus Smart is expected to take on a prominent role alongside Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane. Smart is eager to embrace this responsibility with his new team, stating,
"You always want to be where you're wanted, and another team's trash is another team's gold. So I'm glad to be here. I'm glad to be on an organization that wants me and sees my great value."

Postseason Experience

Smart brings valuable postseason experience to Memphis, having been a part of the Celtics' roster during their multiple Eastern Conference finals appearances and their trip to the NBA Finals in the 2021-22 season
