Rob Pelinka Makes Major Statement on Lakers' Trade Deadline Moves
Rob Pelinka explained the Lakers' decision to stay inactive during the trade deadline.
Speculation had been rampant for months regarding potential trades the Los Angeles Lakers might pursue this season. However, as the February 8 trade deadline passed without any action from the team, GM Rob Pelinka offered insight into their decision-making process."My job is to always look for ways to upgrade our roster, But, you can't buy a house that's not for sale. And so, we spent a lot of time looking for ways to use assets to make our team better, but the right move wasn't there."
Pelinka also emphasized their reluctance to trade their lone first-round draft pick (2029) at the deadline, preferring not to sacrifice it for marginal improvement. With this pick retained, the Lakers now possess three first-round selections available for trade post the 2024 NBA Draft, comprising either the 2024 or 2025 pick, based on the New Orleans Pelicans' preference, in addition to picks in 2029 and 2031. Looking ahead, the Lakers aim to be proactive in the buyout market to fill their remaining roster spot, with strong interest expected in players like Spencer Dinwiddie.
