After the Pistons signed former Coach of the Year Monty Williams to a record-breaking $78.5 million contract, many believed that Detroit would be on the up. Strangely, the opposite is happening, with them clearly the worst team in the association and nearing the all-time record for the losing streak. Now, a former player has spoken out and revealed the true reason behind Detroit's horrendous start to the season.

Losing Streak

The Pistons this season are on course to become the worst team in NBA history, with almost two whole months passing since their last victory. After winning two of their first four games this season, they have gone on to lose 25 games consecutively.

With this losing streak accumulating over a quarter of the entire regular season, it's clear that the Pistons will be nowhere near the playoffs or even the play-in, which sounds ridiculous to claim so early in the campaign.

What's more worrying is that they are so close to breaking the all-time record for the longest NBA losing streak. The current record is held by the Philadelphia 76ers, who went on a 28-game losing streak occurring over the back end of the 2014-2015 season and the beginning of the 2015-2016 season.

What makes the Pistons unique is that they are looking likely to break it in just one season, with enough room to potentially double it without crossing over into next season.

Now, one former Piston who was ironically on the record-holding 76ers team has spoken out and revealed the true reason behind the Pistons' misfortunes.

Former Piston Speaks Out

The former Piston is 9-year veteran Nerlens Noel, who played for Detroit last season. His comment was short but found on social media beneath a video of a Pistons post-game press conference where he posted the following statement:

"Good group of players - the front office and coaches were hurting them boys last year. No BS."

Nerlens's comments align with similar opinions shared by veterans among 'tanking teams' and hint at the front office purposely setting out to lose in an attempt to gain better draft picks.

Tanking has become a huge problem in recent years, with the NBA making attempts to combat intentional losing through measures such as the Play-in tournament and reducing the odds of the worst team landing the first pick. The Pistons experienced this last year when they dropped four places in the draft despite their poor record.

With no penalty for being bad, the Pistons are likely to remain terrible all year long and continue tanking for the foreseeable future. This approach will grant them better opportunities at future talents however for now is only hindering the growth and progression of young stars like Cade Cunningham and Ausar Thompson.
