Surprising Statement Made by Victor Wembanyama about Kyrie Irving
Irving revealed that Wembanyama referred to it as a "lucky shot" afterward.
"Big fella (Wemby) just came over and said that was a lucky shot. I caught him with a hesi, baseline, he thought I was going to reverse it and I went middle. Something about using that rim as protection as a small guard. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but that play it worked, so I'm grateful."
Kyrie Irving guided the Dallas Mavericks to an impressive 116-93 victory against the San Antonio Spurs. Despite trailing by 15 points in the first quarter, the Mavericks rallied back, securing their sixth consecutive win. Irving showcased brilliance throughout his 34-point performance, highlighted by an extraordinary rim finish over the outstretched arms of Victor Wembanyama.
Irving's renowned finishing skills were on display once again, as he effortlessly maneuvered around Wembanyama's lengthy reach for numerous rim conversions.
Despite Wembanyama's strong individual performance of 26 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks, the Mavericks' defensive rotations limited his impact after the first quarter. PJ Washington and Dereck Lively II particularly excelled against Wembanyama, with Lively boasting a +27 rating in just 17 minutes. As the Mavericks head into the All-Star break, Irving, averaging 25.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 5.5 assists, aims to maintain their winning streak alongside co-star Luka Doncic, who will be making his fifth All-Star appearance (fourth as a starter).
