In a display of defensive prowess and unwavering determination, the Dallas Mavericks seized control of their first-round playoff series with a commanding 101-90 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 3.
With the win, the Mavericks now lead the best-of-seven series 2-1 and stand just two victories away from advancing to the conference semifinals. While Friday night's triumph wasn't technically a must-win, history has shown that teams taking a 2-1 series lead advance nearly 79% of the time, placing the odds firmly in the Mavericks' favor as they aim to progress in the postseason.
Key to the Mavericks' success was their suffocating defence, which left the Clippers struggling to find any rhythm or momentum throughout the game. Dallas imposed its will on the defensive end, particularly in the pivotal second quarter, where they held the Clippers to a mere nine points in the final nine minutes before halftime.
Despite Russell Westbrook's relentless aggression, the Clippers faltered down the stretch, unable to overcome the Mavericks' defensive pressure. Dallas forced a total of 19 turnovers, including 12 steals, and blocked seven shots, limiting the Clippers' offensive opportunities and disrupting their flow.
The turning point came in the second quarter when the Mavericks, trailing early on, mounted a 29-9 surge to close out the first half, sparked by a pivotal step-back three-pointer from Luka Dončić. Despite concerns about his knee, Dončić returned to the court and played a vital role in igniting the Mavericks' defensive intensity and offensive firepower.
As the Mavericks now look ahead to Game 4, Dončić remains confident that his knee issue will not hinder his performance. With their defensive identity firmly established, the Mavericks have positioned themselves as frontrunners in the series, poised to capitalize on their defensive dominance and secure a spot in the next round of the playoffs.
If Dallas can maintain this level of defensive excellence, there's no doubt they have what it takes to emerge victorious and advance deeper into the postseason.
