Mark Cuban Reveals The Real Reason He Sold The Mavericks

Mark Cuban has been the owner of the Dallas Mavericks for over 20 years now, and during this time, it has been evident how much of a fan Cuban is. This is what makes last week's sale of the franchise so shocking. However, since appearing on the "ALL THE SMOKE" podcast with former players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, he revealed two possible reasons for the sale.

Cuban Doesn't Want to Pass the Mavericks Down to his Children

The first reason is now believed to be due to Cuban not wanting to pass down ownership of the Mavericks to his son. Mark has three children, all under the age of 21, so he revealed their youth as one factor, alongside the stresses and hardships of running a successful franchise.

«I wouldn't put them through it,»

Now at 65 years old, Cuban may be looking towards the end of his working life and considering spending extended time with his family rather than being caught up in the 24/7 job of owning the Mavericks.

For the Good of the Franchise

The second possible reason appears to be less about himself and more about how it will help the Mavericks in the long term. By selling only the majority of his shares and not all of them, it's clear that Cuban still holds some sentimental value with the franchise. His comments on the podcast reveal why he chose to sell to the Adelson family specifically.

Cuban cited that to succeed in the future of the NBA, you need to be able to develop around the team. He gives Warriors owner Steve Ballmer as an example, highlighting Ballmer's development around the area and praises this as the reason why Golden State is so profitable despite their failing TV deals with Bally Sports.

While Cuban is a highly experienced entrepreneur, as shown with his time on Shark Tank, he does believe that his knowledge of real estate and development lacks compared to the Adelsons, who own numerous casinos and resorts worldwide.

With their track record, it seems clear that the new owners are set to take the Mavericks into the next generation of the NBA. While Cuban remains a fan, he stated that if bringing in other investors ultimately helps the Mavericks win, then he is all for it.

«You look at Golden State, How can they afford that? Because they own everything. Right? They do all the development around there, and you see what [Steve] Ballmer's doing. The money they see coming in isn't from the local TV deal, right, because Bally's is falling apart. And I'm not a real estate guy, and I just want the Mavs to win, so if I have to bring in a partner who knows that shit, I'm fine with that. I just want the Mavs to win.»
