The Mavericks incredible start to the season has slowed down somewhat after a 127 - 116 loss to the Toronto Raptors. During this loss, recently acquired forward Grant Williams was involved in a controversial interaction where he slapped Dennis Schroder in the face.

Williams Slaps Schroder

While known for having a fiery personality on the basketball court, Williams is not necessarily perceived as a dirty player. He has averaged 3 technical fouls per season so far in his career, but this is mostly due to his physical style of play rather than being a spiteful player.

Interestingly, since joining the Mavericks, Williams has become more aggressive and already has 2 technical fouls just 8 games into this season. This could be due to the fact that he feels bitter over being traded from the Celtics, or it could be from an increased ego created by almost doubling his career-high in points per game so far this season.

Whatever the reason, Williams' new side was shown off in front of the world when he slapped veteran guard Dennis Schroder in the face. The strike was not made with any harmful intent physically but more like a mocking gesture towards his opponent. Nonetheless, contact was made, and despite the refs calling nothing, by NBA rules, he should've been given a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct at a minimum.

Schroder Beef With Mavericks Player

Throughout the game, there were signs of hostility towards Schroder from the entire Mavericks roster. Many believe that this was due to the bad blood between Schroder and Mavericks player Maxi Kleber, whose beef has gotten so bad that it ultimately forced Kleber to withdraw from playing for the German national team.

Williams' slap across the cheek could have been a part of this ongoing feud, which was fired off by Schroder's brutal comments on Kleber before the FIBA World Cup this summer.

"Maxi wasn't there last year. If you didn't commit – that was actually the message for all of us – then you won't be there next year either... You throw in the corner, you defend. You're a pick-and-roll player. You're not a Carmelo Anthony type of player. You don't have to work on your game. The older you get, the more you see what your strengths are. And you try to maximize them so blatantly that you can play in the NBA for as long as possible. For me, it's like, 'Maxi, working on your game? You can't play in the NT for that?' That bothered me a little bit, to be honest"
