Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report suggests that unless the Cleveland Cavaliers make a deep playoff run, Donovan Mitchell is likely to decline an extension offer and seek opportunities elsewhere. The Cavaliers are expected to trade Mitchell before he becomes a free agent. Mitchell has the option to sign a four-year extension worth approximately $200 million this summer, but he also has a player option worth $37 million for the 2025-26 season.

If he declines this option, he will become an unrestricted free agent in 2025. Mitchell has stated that he will address his future with the Cavaliers at the appropriate time.

''I think the biggest thing for me, as I said before to you earlier, I mean obviously you have to ask the question, but my focus is I got a lot of things to focus on outside of that right now,'' Mitchell said, via The Athletic. ''I've got to focus on myself, getting back for this group, focus on us getting over this stretch, continuing to be ready when it comes time. So, I'll handle that when it comes, and I understand you gotta ask that question and I'll give you the same answer.''

The Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, New York Knicks, and Brooklyn Nets have emerged as potential destinations for Mitchell, who lacks a no-trade clause in his contract.

Mitchell is currently averaging 26.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game this season, with shooting percentages of 46.3% from the field, 36.8% from beyond the arc, and 86.8% from the free-throw line.

As a native of New York, Mitchell holds career averages of 24.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.6 assists, having played for the Utah Jazz and Cavaliers. He achieved a career-high 71 points in a single game last season against the Chicago Bulls.

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert expressed confidence to Larry Lage of The Associated Press that Mitchell will sign an extension during this offseason. Cleveland acquired Mitchell from Utah in September 2022.

The Cavaliers hold a 46-31 record for the season, placing them third in the Eastern Conference standings.

As of now, if the regular season were to conclude, the Cavaliers would meet the Indiana Pacers in the opening round of the 2024 playoffs.
