On X, previously known as Twitter, Jones addressed his release from the Hornets for the first time. He seemed unperturbed by his sudden exit, saying, "I used to pray for times like this #GOATLIFE."


This departure may align with Jones' desires, as he had previously been suspended by the team during training camp due to his social media antics. Subsequently, he requested a trade, leaving it uncertain whether he was joking or not. Nevertheless, Charlotte took this seriously and announced, "Charlotte Hornets President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Mitch Kupchak announced today the team has waived forward/center Kai Jones."

What Lies Ahead for Kai Jones?

Kai Jones was the 19th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft for the Hornets, chosen ahead of notable prospects such as Quentin Grimes, Cam Thomas, Herbert Jones, and Ayo Dosunmu, among others.

Throughout his two seasons and 67 total games with the team, the 22-year-old struggled to secure a consistent role. He averaged just 2.7 points and 2.0 rebounds while playing for a mere 9.1 minutes per game. However, his playing time increased from three minutes in his rookie season to 12 minutes in his sophomore year.
