This summer, the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia co-hosted the FIBA World Cup. The tournament showcased the best 32 nations in the world. Despite being heavy favorites to win the competition, Team USA finished without any medals after losing to Germany and Canada in the latter games of the tournament.

While many of the United States' top stars, such as LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant, opted not to play international basketball this summer, one two-time All-Star did want to represent his country but was unfortunately not chosen for the squad. This star was none other than Trae Young, who did not hold back his feelings about feeling "disrespected" when speaking at the Atlanta Hawks Media Day this week.

«If you don't think I've been disrespected, you're just not telling the truth,»

Young has averaged over 25 points and 9 assists per game in each of the last four seasons and has led the entire league in assists over the last two seasons, which on paper should make him a leading candidate to represent any country in the world. However, Team USA decided to go forward with guards Jalen Brunson and Tyrese Haliburton instead.

While Haliburton did average 0.2 more assists per game than Trae this past season, Young was overall statistically better. He also led both alternative guards in points and games played, which makes you wonder why Team USA did not want to utilize Young's talents at the World Cup.

With no comments from Team USA management regarding why Young was snubbed, there is speculation on whether it was Young's defensive skills that caused him not to be chosen, as he is well known for being a one-sided player. Another reason could be that Haliburton made the All-Star game over Young last season, which is another thing Young feels disrespected over, as he claims he "should've been on it already."

«That's not my goal, being on an All-Star team I should've been on it already,"

With LeBron James reportedly assembling a United States Superteam for the Paris Olympics next summer, it seems like it will be even harder for Young to make the international team. However, with next season to prove himself even more, he can certainly plead his case by showcasing his talents for the Hawks. He is said to be very excited about the upcoming season, claiming he is going to reach a "whole other level."

«I'm ready to get going. I think Quin has done a great job I'm just ready to play. We were already a really good offense, but I feel like our offense is gonna go to a whole other level, which is really scary I'm just excited to start playing.»
